*Lab Technician**Summary*The Lab Technician is responsible for the procurement of product samples and the accurate testing of product samples to ensure premium product. The Lab Technician must be knowledgeable of American Standard Test Methods- ASTM & American Assoc. Standard Transportation - AASHTO procedures. The Lab Technician must be knowledgeable of their results pertaining to the product of all functions of the Refinery Quality Control. This position must have working understanding of the workflow and be able to demands, understand all the avenues of support and check with associated to secure an even and productive flow of production. This position must be able to recognize potentially hazardous situations, and react quickly and professionally. This position is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe work area. This position is responsible for other duties as necessary.Schedule: 8:00 PM - 8:00 AM. 2 days on and 2 days off rotation.*Essential Functions of the job*There are several main duties this position will perform. Those duties are listed below.Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. - Reviews processing schedules, laboratory logs and procedures and verifies its accuracy. Records information on forms enters them in a computer and notifies shift supervisors by radio. - Run samples from Refinery and other sites. Walks to various process unit control rooms or refinery locations. Carries containers holding up to 8 quarts of liquid and at one time. Collects samples taken by other workers. Lifts and carries 1 quart cans and occasionally can lift and carry full 5 gallon cans. May need to assist operations/engineering in collecting gas samples. - Knowledge in the operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS) instrument. - Perform daily Quality Assurance/Quality Control requirements set forth by the test method. - Monitor and quality assurance on Waste water samples (LA County) - Evaluates the chemical and physical properties of various organic and inorganic substances in order to investigate their applications. - Documentation of all reports, records, and information on daily activities. - Conduct routine and special lab testing, as trained, including the following tests: - API gravities, Flash points, Penske Martens, Distillations - Maintain 100% accuracy in product quality reporting and chain of custody sampling - Run Process Gravities / (check gravity and thermometer temperature) - Flash points COC-cleveland open cup & Penske Martens - (Check temperature against ignition) Maintain Lab cleanliness - All aspects of lab housekeeping - Automatic Distillation - (Fill up a 100militer of product into a beaker). - Provide documentation for Chain of Custody transported to DK (data entry daily). - This position must maintain sufficient training progress including classroom training, job specific training, and inter-active training modules on Laboratory Technician Fundamentals, such as; Using Process Safety, and Distillation, etc. - Other duties as assigned*Education/Experience/Other* - High school diploma or equivalent - Required*Math/Numerical Ability*Must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure, calculate percentages, volumes, weights and use fractions and decimals. Must have the ability to use simple formulas to calculate ratios, circumference, area, volume; and to determine time, temperatures, weight and interpret work schedules.*Reading Comprehension*Must have the ability to read (in English) and understand a variety of technical materials (including ASTM and AASHTO Standards), training books, safety, environmental and administrative policies and procedures. Must have the ability to read, interpret and apply instructions in the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Must have the ability to read (in English), interpret and apply testing, emergency and safety and environmental instructions.*Writing*Must have the ability to legibly write (in English) safety permits, incident reports, forms and information in log books using correct spelling and sentence structure. Must also have the ability to convey thoughts.*Speaking*Must have the ability to speak clearly on the telephone and/or during radio communications. Must have the skills to give clear instruction and convey thought, ideas and facts.*Visual*Ability to visually determine approximate size and shape. Ability to visually inspect equipment, read meters, gauges and recording devices.*Clerical Aptitude: *Ability to accurately complete forms such as requisitions, safety permits, laboratory logs, and incident reports. Ability to locate and record data accurately.*Physical Requirements as follows;**Degree of Physical Strength*Occasionally lifts and/or exerts up to 50 pounds of force and frequently lifts and exerts up to 25 pounds of force. Lifts and carries five gallon sample cans weight up to 50 pounds and moved nitrogen and other gas cylinders weighing up to 100 pounds by balancing and rolling on the bottom or by use of hand cart.*Standing/Walking*Standing and walking (up to six hours per shift) within the laboratory and over refinery sight. Walking is on hard surfaces (concrete) or over uneven and rough surfaces.*Climbing*Daily climbs stairs to work area.*Dexterity/Coordination*Ability to use fingers to move knobs, buttons or switches on control panel. Ability to grasp and turn hand wheels or levers to open or close valves or gage tanks using tape gauge.*Other Physical Requirements*Ability to crouch, kneel, bend or stoop to perform tasks such as checking liquid drains, checking bleeders in lines or opening valves located near the ground.Ability to use hands, arms and upper body strength to grasp and turn valves, use wrenches and other tools and/or hold on to guard rails while walking and climbing stairs or ladders.Ability to reach in all directions to open overhead valves or collect samples.*Hearing*Ability to hear detailed telephone and radio instructions in the presence of background noise.*Seeing* - Far - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more - Near - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less - *Field of Vision*- Area that can be seen up and down or to he right or the left while the eyes are fixed on a given point - Ability to see and discern shapes under conditions of limited light - Ability to discern colors as many tests require ability to distinguish between slight color changes*Environmental Conditions (Physical Surroundings): *This position is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. A typical shift may find the employee inside of the laboratory for 85% of the shift and outside for 15%. This employee is not protected from temperature changes.Under storm/rain conditions the employee may spend more time in the laboratory protected from the weather. However, the employee may spend time outside un-protected as he/she performs essential tasks.*Noise and/or Vibration*In some areas there is sufficient noise, either constant or intermittent, to cause marked distraction or possible hearing loss. This employee may also be exposed to slight vibration. Hearing protection is supplied to employees.*Atmospheric Conditions*The laboratory is equipped with blower suction ventilation systems. However, this position may be exposed to the following conditions which affect the respiratory system or skin: Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, or gases. Under certain circumstances these conditions may be present to a degree or length of time sufficient to cause discomfort. Protective equipment and training is provided to these employees.*Hazards*This position faces conditions or situation in which there is risk of bodily injury or danger to life or health.
