Purpose Statement/Position Summary: Dr. Tsai's lab is studying oncogenic mechanisms underlying pediatric brain tumors. The Tsai Lab at CHLA is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to join our research program as an Associate Research Specialist. The Tsai Lab studies the genomics of pediatric brain tumors, focusing on using functional genomics approaches to characterize tumor drivers and identify novel dependencies with the goal of finding better therapies for childhood cancer. The Associate Research Specialist will perform molecular biology techniques (cloning, plasmid generation, DNA and RNA isolations), protein work including Western blots, generate lentivirus, culture neurosphere cell lines, and perform functional genomics experiments in these cell lines. This individual will be expected to be organized, plan and prepare for experiments, and conduct routine and non-routine laboratory procedures. This person will be expected to accurately document their methods, analyze data, and assist in the preparation of results for publication in research journals as well as posters or presentations for conferences. The individual will also be involved in tumor dissociations for making cell lines. The Associate Research Specialist will present in lab meetings and will engage in one-on-one meets with the PI on a regular basis to discuss research progress and professional development, including mentorship regarding graduate and/or medical school. Additional laboratory responsibilities include ordering lab supplies, lab maintenance, and lab management. The Associate Research Specialist under supervision, conducts routine laboratory research procedures. Follows protocol to perform experiments. Tabulates data and may assist with analysis. Performs routine equipment maintenance and orders supplies. May provide instruction to support personnel.

Minimum Qualifications/Work Experience: 1+ years of experience performing laboratory research. Strong preference for 2 year commitment. Must be proficient in the following:

  • Experience with cell culture and sterile technique
  • General molecular biology skills (cloning of plasmids, lentiviral generation) and ability to follow wet lab protocols
  • Attention to detail and maintaining accurate records
  • Willingness to learn with excellent problem solving and decision-making skills
    Education/Licensure/Certification: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a scientific field. (e.g., biology, microbiology, biochemistry, chemistry, engineering).

    Pay Scale Information

    $37,232.00-$61,953.00

Final determination of a successful candidate's starting pay will vary based on a number of factors, including, but not limited to education and experience within the job or the industry. The pay scale listed for this position is generally for candidates that meet the specified qualifications and requirements listed on this specific job description. Additional pay may be determined for those candidates that exceed these specified qualifications and requirements.
